Four Steps to Take After Creating Social Media Pages

Managing social media is a big undertaking for a company of any size. It takes intentional effort, strategic planning, creativity, time and money to make your social media work. In June of 2016, we spoke to a table of business professionals at the Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce Lunch & Learn about this topic. The common troubling theme we heard from people was: "When I get busy, I just don't have time to do social media." This is not unusual for us to hear. When things get going, people tend to work in their business and not on their business.

But rest assured. If you know the importance social media has in business, we have a game plan to help you be successful. We have outlined four major points for you to follow after you or one of your employees has set up social media pages for your company.

1. Choose what networks are best for your company to use

Our best advice for you is to focus when it comes to social media. Don't get caught up in the "shiny object syndrome" when it comes to being on every network. Your company doesn't need to have a presence on every social media platform. We highly recommend to all of our clients that they are on Facebook for their company. Here's why: There are 1.79 billion monthly active users on Facebook, according to Statista. And 93% of all Facebook accounts are real people.

Here are two articles about Choosing Social Media For Your Business that will help you decide which networks are best for your company: Part 1 and Part 2

2. Define your goals

In order to know the purpose that social media will serve for your business, you must define some goals. Here are a couple questions to help you start thinking about this:

  1. What do I hope to achieve by having (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc)?

  2. What do I want people to do after simply liking or following my company?

  3. What is my vision for social media?

3. Decide who Will manage your company's social media accounts

This is important if you want social media to be successful. Someone, whether it's you, an employee, intern or a professional social media manager (wink, wink), needs to be actively posting, managing and responding on your social media accounts. It's also a good rule of thumb to have social media guidelines in place if there are going to be employees or interns managing your company's social media. The last thing you want to do as a business owner is have an upset employee go rogue and abuse having access to your pages. Set up proper guidelines when you start using social media and set the tone of expectations for anyone who starts to manage your page.

4. Create a social media calendar

It’s really easy to let social media slip from your mind and fall to the bottom of your to-do list. Creating a plan can help guide you and keep you accountable to regularly posting.

Consistency is key with social media. Facebook already makes it hard enough for posts to get in front of customers so make sure you are getting your content out there regularly. Sit down and look at the calendar for the next 3 to 6 months. Here are some questions to help get you started on creating a social media calendar.

  • Is your company hosting any events?

  • Are you or any of your employees speaking or sponsoring any events?

  • Are you running any specials in the next coming months?

  • What holiday or seasons coming up that you can focus some posts around?

  • Do you plan on rolling out a new product or service? You can run a campaign teasing until the launch.

Also leave room for newsworthy content

  • New hires

  • New product/service launches

  • Company featured in media

Following these four steps will help get you started in the right direction with your social media. Remember, consistency is key. Have a plan when it comes to what content you will be sharing and engage with your followers.
