What’s the news?
The visual sharing social network announced that posts will no longer be displayed chronologically. Much like Facebook's Top Stories algorithm, the new order of photos and videos will be based on a user’s level of interest, their relationship with other Instagram users, and the post’s timeliness.
Why are they doing it?
Since Instagram has 400 million active users, people are only seeing about 30 percent of the content from accounts they follow. The new algorithm will allow users to see more of the posts they care about.
When will it happen?
Relax and take a deep breath—Instagram's new algorithm will take some time. Right now, they are only in the testing stage. In the next few months they will be listening to users' feedback, and making adjustments along the way.
What does this mean for your business?
Currently, time is the only factor deciding whether or not your post will be seen. As long as you post at times when most users are on Instagram, you have nothing to worry about.
However, this new algorithm will change all of that. Businesses will need to focus on creating quality content if they want to get noticed. Posts that aren’t engaging or interesting will be put near the bottom, and more engaging ones will be seen at the top.
In addition to the algorithm, be prepared to rely more on using Instagram’s ad platform. Just like with Facebook’s algorithm, if businesses want their content to be seen by more of their followers, creating ads will be necessary.
