Install our free 1272 word profanity list on your Facebook page, and keep the trolls at bay!
Have you set up Page Moderation on your Facebook Business page? If not, you're leaving your page open to the risk of someone using profanity on your page.
Recently, while in discussions with a prospective client, it happened to them. Someone unleashed a tirade of profanities on their Facebook Business page. The reasons and details are not important. What is important is that this company suddenly and shockingly discovered just how important the Facebook Page Moderation and Profanity Filter settings are.
Be Safe, Be Pre-Emptive!
We are often surprised that many businesses have not set up this important tool. It's one of our favorite features for Facebook pages, and one of the first things we set up when we take on the management of a client's Facebook Business page.
It can do more for your page than simply filtering dirty words. For example, you can pre-emptively filter out mentions of your competitors, former grudge-bearing employees, or pretty much anything you don't want appearing on your page. However, the true beauty of this tool is that the person who is being censored will have no idea that their comments have automatically been hidden by your page. When they look at the page, they will still see their comment, but the rest of the universe will be none the wiser*.
Unfortunately, 'trolls' are a thing and we have to deal with them.
It's unfortunate, but we live in a world where 'trolls' are no longer fantasy creatures. They are out there, lurking around the internet, waiting for opportunities to spread their negativity. If your Facebook Business page falls prey to one of these trolls, you will be faced with the following options:
- Delete the comment and risk agitating the troll.
- Ban them and then worry that they will return using a fake account, or invite their troll friends to wreak havoc.
- Take pre-emptive steps to set up Page Moderation, so you never need to worry about profanity appearing ?
We think the answer is pretty clear (it's number 3).
Don't leave things to chance!
You may be aware that Facebook has its own profanity filter, which may lead you to wonder why you would need your own list? The problem is that Facebook does not share their profanity list. We're sure it's very comprehensive, and we recommend you use it, but by having your own list, you can filter any and all the words you want. We simply prefer not to leave things to chance.
In fact, over the past several years, we have consolidated a large number of profanity lists into one master document: The Be Brilliant! Facebook Page Moderation List. It's a comprehensive list of 1,272 profanities you never want to see on your Facebook Page. It's free to download, just click on the graphic to the right. Use it on your Facebook page, or any where else you may want to use it.

As mentioned before, you can add to our list any words that you do not want appearing on your Facebook page. Any comments containing the offending phrase will be hidden from the public. The original poster won't even know you've hidden their comment. If you still want to ban them from your page, you can make that call. There is always a chance that, if they are clever and determined enough, they may find a way to get under your skin without using bad language. Just remember to keep your cool, don't get drawn in, don't fuel the fire, and remove unwanted pests if you need to.
* In some cases, the original posters' friends may still be able to see their offensive comment and they may be able to comment on it. Our advice, keep an eye on what people are saying on your page so you can manage these situations promptly.
