When it comes to marketing strategy, the Be Brilliant! team always takes time to understand your audience: Who they are, how do they shop, why do they need your product or service, what shapes their decisions, etc. We see how the rise of the Millennial generation is driving change in the way many businesses are marketing.

So it was no surprise to read this article in The News-Press, Welcome to Fort Millennial, which highlights the impact of Millennials (18 to 34 year-olds) on the tourism and hospitality industry in Southwest Florida.

To be sure, the region cannot rest on its laurels, and count on the next generation of young adults to visit here repeatedly only because some of their elders do.
— Laura Ruane, Travel & Tourism Reporter, The News-Press

The reporter notes that many resorts in the region are updating properties and services "to meet the expectations of these young adult travelers.

Our experience tells us that along with updating the physical side of the business, it's just as important to update how you market to be sure you meet Millennials where they are and connect with this influential demographic of an estimated 84 million consumers.

The News-Press article points to survey results that show Millennial travelers are more likely than other age group to use social media to share photos from their travels. We'll add to that: It's not just photos they share!

Millennials are also on social media sharing their travel experiences—good and bad.

Whether on Facebook or Twitter, or popular reviews sites like Yelp, Google, or TripAdvisor—they are not shy about speaking up about what was good and speaking out when something didn't live up to expectations.

No matter what business you are in, chances are there's more than one Millennial (and other customers) talking about your business on social media. If you aren't on social media or actively maintaining existing social media accounts, what are you waiting for?

You're not only missing out on the best ways to connect with Millennials and other key audiences, you're also risking your reputation.

To expand on an idea presented in the News-Press article: This is no time to rest on your laurels and expect the younger generation to shop and buy just like their parents and grandparents.
