Get noticed. It's the most fundamental challenge for marketing communications. While there are many marketing tactics to add to your mix, there's one that tops our list – and works for most every business goal: Blog.

Want a more effective way to stand out in the crowd? Blog. Want to be recognized as a thought-leader in your industry? Blog. Want to attract new customers, appeal to talented job-seekers? Blog. Want to drive more traffic to your website? Blog. (Do you see a trend?!)

Blogging works! We help our clients make it work and we've seen how it works for our own business – see sidebar story – and we wanted to share a couple lessons this experience reinforced. 

  1. Blogging really does matter. It's often easy to take your own expertise for granted. Talking about the work we do in our own industries becomes ordinary to us. We talk about it with clients, at networking events and in daily conversations when people ask, "What do you do?" But just because it's common knowledge to you doesn't mean that someone else knows exactly what you do or how you do it. Blogging is a great platform to share what you know and attract an audience looking for your expertise. We tell people all the time why branding matters, but we know that not everyone is going to remember when they need to. So we blog about it.

    Another example: For a real estate agent, appraisals and inspections are second nature. But a first-time home buyer might not be as familiar with those topics. What better way to win over a new client without breaking the bank? Write a short, informative blog post about appraisals and home inspections. Share your expertise about your industry to connect with people who want to know.
     

  2. Blogs help improve search ranking. Blogs give search engines original content written in a natural way. If you don't want to pay to get higher rankings on Google (or other search engines), start blogging. The more original content you are regularly posting, the more traffic you will attract to your blog and website. Also be sure you are writing with keywords most relevant to your business and industry. This is help your organic search engine rankings. Blog with words and phrases people typically use to search for your type of business.

How our Be! Blog got national exposure

A reporter in New York City contacted Brilliant Lens late last summer and interviewed Bryon for an article to be published on Bank of America's Small Business Community resource. Bryon was one of three experts from across the U.S. asked to share their insights on the question of why small businesses need to develop a strong brand and brand guidelines.

Naturally, we wondered how Brilliant Lens caught the attention of a major national company and was recognized as an authority on the subject of branding. When Bryon asked the reporter, Robert, the answer was: "Your blog."

Robert said he had Googled the phrase "why branding matters for small businesses." Our Be! Blog was first in the Google search results with a link to a blog post on that exact topic. Robert said he read the post and knew he wanted to find out more.
